1. Semiotic Study on the Design of Architectural and Urban Space

Architectural and urban spaces have become homogeneous and lost regional and historical meanings, and as the result many meaningful environments and beautiful landscapes have been disappeared under the context of modernization in the 20th century. We investigate the architectural and urban semiotics in order to solve those problems and to design fascinating architectural and urban spaces.

2. Design Methodology of Architectural and Urban Space

We cannot solve the complex and wicked design problems in contemporary society by means of the systematic design methods to solve problems based on technical rationality. Accordingly we focus on the design subjects designing flexibly depending on situations, and investigate the new design methods for the dialogue design processes which make possible to design relations between artifacts and the nature, relations between artifacts, and relations between artifacts and design subjects including users.

- Design Process as Sign Processes (generation, degeneration, transformation, combination etc.)

3. Study on Behavior and Cognition in Architecture and Urban Environment

People get plenty of information such as form, color, sound, texture, perfume, and movement from environments, and act on environments through own behaviors. We focus on identity and orientation as basic needs for environments and pursue desirable man-environment systems from the viewpoint of human behavior and cognition.

4. System Theory on Design and Evaluation of Human Environment

Human environment as man-environment system is a synthetic system composed of various elements, and a dynamic system including man as an element. We develop many approaches to human environment based on system theory in order to lead this complex system to desirable human environment.
